Words & Pictures by Shaun Troke
We all know that German’s are reputed to indulge in large portions of food & drink…
So, for those with lesser tamed tummies, here’s a few smaller portioned suggestions.
EXPORTS
Due to staying near Checkpoint Point Charlie – at Gat Point Charlie – these first two recommendations can be found in this same area…
Coffee Fellows
A German franchise founded in Munich…
I found Coffee Fellows to be a lovely place to relax.
It truly is one of those places you could stay at all day – either working, reading, or writing – as it has the perfect environment to be your remote office.
The staff are young & nice, and ever so courteous…
You only have to look at the picture to see that presentation is priority at Coffee Fellows!
Curry at the Wall
If you’re looking to grab a traditional Currywurst or Bratwurst while in Berlin…
Curry at the Wall is the ideal location to do so!
Perched next to the Welt Balloon attraction, and, faced opposite the Remains of the Berlin Wall, this outdoor dining venue has upbeat staff who really make sure you enjoy your food!
With such an impressive Currywurst & Bratwurst menu (including meal and vegan options), at fairly reasonable prices, I couldn’t try one without the other…
Out of the two, I favoured the Bratwurst.
Not a huge curry fan, I didn’t find the Currywurst as tasty as the Brat…
Though, I’m sure thousands would disagree with me!
IMPORTS
Italian (for convenience): VaVeloce
Also located in the Checkpoint Charlie area, opposite Coffee Fellows, is this large Italian restaurant.
As many of the reviews state on Google, yes, the staff can be a little rude…
Though, if you’ve a thick skin, and, able to focus more on the food (or company, should you be dining with someone), then you’ll find that VaVeloce is worth dining at.
The relaxed atmosphere is created from the open plan seating area. And, my choices of dishes were Carbonara and Gnocchi, both served with bread, and additional parmesan cheese.
Both were equally delicious…
Full of flavour…
And, the portion sizes were spot-on, as neither caused a feeling of bloating.
Vietnamese (for dinner): Chen Che
Known for being a Tea House…
Chen Che is certainly a restaurant that represents nothing to do with Berlin!
The interior is themed with Vietnamese furniture, staff, & nature, which ultimately concludes why a table at this popular venue needs to be booked in advance.
My order was light: A small side of chicken breasts & wedges, washed down with a fresh juice drink.
What really caught my eye at Che Chen were their POS devices: Each staff member carries around this hand-held gadget, which also allows groups to split the bill per person…
Perfect for saving time when your group tries to split the bill manually!
American (for dessert): The Sixties Diner
I do like an American diner that goes out of their way to make their restaurant feel….well, American!
And, The Sixties Diner doesn’t hold back on Americana memorabilia…
The interior features:
Flat-screen TV’s playing US sports events; Typical red leather diner seats enveloping tables; USA posters & signs decorating the walls; And, an old-style jukebox plays in the background.
How about a slice of New York Cheesecake? Served with a Jack Daniel’s Lynchburg Lemonade?
The latter is a super-strong alcoholic drink (served in a jar with a handle!) and, just one of these will start you on your journey to tipsyland…
See, who needs German beer in a tankard when you’ve got Jack nearby!
McDonald’s (for extras)
While on the American theme, here’s our traditional McDonald’s report.
I found the McDonald’s Menu in Germany to be extremely huge in variety! So much so, I wasn’t able to try all of it…
However, new items I did try were:
McDouble Chilli Cheese (a double cheeseburger, with jalapeño peppers, not pickle)
Pizza Mac (with cheese on top of the bun)
Signature Classic (pictured)
Overall, while the taste of these products weren’t exactly overwhelming, the Berlin McDonald’s menu certainly exceeds any I’ve seen anywhere else!
