Upon a midnight arrival, the Gat Point Charlie hotel felt young & vibrant, yet peaceful & relaxed…
Was I still in Germany?!?!
Germans are renowned for being ‘uptight’, so you can imagine my surprise when the upbeat Spanish staff of this Spanish hotel chain welcomed me with such openness.
Polite, friendly…’laid-back’ would be the best word to describe the first impressions: Staff seemed very happy, maybe because their dress code looked comfortable, with some even wearing Converse All Stars…
The work environment came across as ‘satisfied’.
And, so was I, by the end of my stay…
GAT ROOMS
I was tired when I entered the Junior Suite…
Oh, but how I perked up upon seeing this exquisite room for the first time!
There were sofas.
There were loungers.
There was a desk. And, even a birdcage!
This room contained more than my own apartment!
And, THIS was to be my new home for a week.
I learned this hotel is very popular with business travellers, and I can see why…
The rooms provide the perfect environment to work in AND to retire to.
The bed was comfortable. I mean, when I slept I slept: No waking up in the night, no disturbances…
The room was excellently quiet.
What also helped was the black-out curtains tucked behind the show curtains…this allowed for a super dark room in the morning, making sure the sun never wakes you.
And, one of the most important things you need if you’re working away from home?
Wifi.
Gat Point Charlie’s wifi is simple to connect to…and, it’s fast!
Not once did I struggle to load a webpage. And, at a guess, this hotel may even have fibre broadband, because I was able to upload a video in no time at all!
GAT LOCATION
Wherever you visit, location is everything.
And, Gat Point Charlie hails its name from the nearby WW2 attraction, Checkpoint Charlie.
So, as you can imagine, the area caters for the masses, with plenty of restaurants, bars, & cafes nearby…AFTER you’ve experienced the bars & restaurants INSIDE the hotel, of course (if you like low-price cocktails, the hotel has a Happy Hour from 6pm-8pm!)
PLUS, with the U-Bahn Checkpoint Charlie / U Kochstraße station only a 3min walk from Gat Point Charlie, this allows you access to the entire city from your doorstep!
An important travel tip to remember:
When using Google Maps to find your way to this hotel, the App will inform you to take a long 9min route…the reality is that it’s only a 3min walk.
The first time I arrived, I followed the 9min walk, which was tricky at 11pm at night (I walked across some kind of red-carpet event, with my noisy suitcase!), so your best bet is to use the latter part of the hotel address only – Mauerstraße 81-82, 10117 Berlin – this will give you the 3min route.
GAT POINT CHARLIE
I’d give this 3-star hotel a 5-star rating.
It’s luxury/budget at its best.
The rooms are luxurious.
The food is plentiful.
And, if you’re in Berlin to absorb its history, the hotel incorporates many retro characteristics from World War 2 into its modern design.
On a personal note, the punctual housekeeping team deserve so much praise…
Every day, they go out of their way to keep your room looking fresh: From hoovering the carpets, to replenishing the mini-fridge and toiletries, everything is made to look exactly how you found it.
And, I found it warm & welcoming.
So much so, that when the time came to check-out, I was sad to leave…
Because, for an entire week, this hotel had truly felt like home.
