Review & Pictures by Shaun Troke
If you don’t speak a word of Greek, you may be thinking, “Such a bizarre name for a hotel!”…
Well, once you know what ‘Flegra‘ means, it’ll begin to make some kind of sense.
The Flegra Palace hotel is located on the first peninsula (or first finger) of Halkidiki: Kassandra…
And, this area of Kassandra is sat upon a dormant volcano, and is where the name Flegra arrives from: The translation of Flegra means “Place of Fire”.
“Flegra” was the original name for Kassandra, too.
While the mentioned volcano may have lain dormant for years, my stay at the Flegra Palace Hotel was a lot shorter…only 12 hours in fact (8 of these were spent sleeping)….
And, here’s what made a volcanic impression:
RECEPTION
During those 12 hours, I interacted with only 2 receptionists, both of whom were very helpful, kind, & friendly.
The reception area adjoins the restaurant, and, doors that lead out onto a terrace facing the pool.
Also inside the reception area is a comfortable reading corner, complete with cushions…
…with a panoramic view of the reception area!
ROOMS
The front entrance of the room looked out onto the hills…
The back of the room faced out towards the sea…
Turf & Surf!
Most of the rooms tend to have a balcony, along with table & chairs, and a clothes rack to hang your wet swimming clothes on!
Inside the room, one feature that really stood out was the frosted glass-window divide between the bedroom and the bathroom: This could be a nice little romantic element for any couples sharing the room.
When it came to bedtime, sleep was uninterrupted – the bed was comfortable, and no noise was heard from neighbouring rooms, or the outside world.
REST & RECREATION
Food & Drink
During my 12-hour stint at the Flegra, I was able to enjoy two meals:
Both of these meals were in buffet form…
And, the staff promptly made sure that tables are cleared as soon as guests finish dining…
Food is included in the price of your stay, and any drinks are charged additionally.
Facilities
At night, the pool looks beautiful:
Coloured lights change every few seconds…
Which must be soothing on the eyes when sat the bar overlooking the pool.
Also, Flegra Palace are an eco-friendly hotel that give you the choice to reuse the towels in your room (a beneficial option for all you eco-warriors out there!)
Nearby
If you’ve hired a car (or live in Greece & own a car!), just minutes away is the nearest town of Pefkochori.
Here, there are many bars, restaurants, shops…and, most of all, people.
I only drove through this area a couple of times, but wasn’t able to explore the town…
Though, from observations from the car window, it looked lively & abundant.
RESULT
This really feels like a whirlwind basic review.
But, with less than 4 hours spent at the hotel, I hope this brief review has helped make up your mind about staying here.
Personally, I would’ve liked to have spent more time lounging around the hotel reception area, as well as making visits to nearby Pefkochori…
So, if you ever find yourself booking a stay at this ‘Place of Fire’ Hotel, be sure you stay there for more than 4 hours!
